Research Summary
Dr. Caicedo Granados developed the first murine model of laryngeal cancer described in the literature. This model has a great potential for evaluating new agents for chemoprevention and treatment of laryngeal carcinoma. He also works on developing therapeutic strategies for reactivating wild-type p53 in HPV (human papilloma virus) oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

I have been a faculty member since completing my training in 2007. Within Otolaryngology, my practice encompasses the broad spectrum of esthetic and reconstructive Facial Plastic Surgery.
Surgical procedures I commonly perform include functional and cosmetic septorhinoplasty; reconstruction of Mohs surgical defects within the head & neck; browlift & blepharoplasty; and repair of facial skeletal fractures. I am one of the Facial Plastic Surgeons responsible for the care of the Minnesota Wild pro hockey team. As a generally avid sports fan, I've learned that the sun shines distinctly brighter whenever the New York Yankees win. Writing has been a particular passion of mine, culminating in my autobiographical memoir that reads like a perpetual Seinfeld episode.

As an otologist, I specialize in the treatment of chronic ear disease and perform surgery for tympanic membrane perforations, cholesteatoma, otosclerosis, ossicular chain reconstruction, and cochlear implants. I treat patient of all ages, children and adults.
The otologic condition in which I have the broadest surgical expertise is cholesteatoma, an aggressive epithelial cyst grows in the ear and left untreated, can cause serious complications.
Since 2013 I have been performing endoscopic ear surgery for all middle ear surgeries and selected cases of cholesteatoma. This minimally invasive surgical technique allows for improved visualization, structure preservations, avoidance of a a scar behind the ear, quicker recovery and decreased postoperative pain.

Bio
Dr. Hamlar specializes in craniofacial and skull base surgery. He prides his work on helping patients facing difficult to remove cranial base tumors and disfiguring traumatic injuries to restore them to an acceptable cosmetic and functional lifestyle.
He provides the full breadth of plastic and reconstructive surgical options for my patients. From newborns with cleft lips and palates to cancer patients requiring free tissue transfer; from skull base tumors only accessible with minimally invasive techniques to restoring form and function to injured patients This has been reinforced through my military career taking care of our wounded men and women, as well as humanitarian missions taking care of those who otherwise would not receive care.
In addition, he works with high school, college, and professional sports teams to enhance and return them to full active participation in their respective sports.

Jesse Hoffmeister, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is an Assistant Professor and Speech-Language Pathologist in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Minnesota, where he specializes in the assessment and treatment of voice, swallowing, and upper airway disorders. He completed his doctoral degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and is certified by the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association.
Dr. Hoffmeister's research focuses on the relationships between cranial sensorimotor function and cognitive/psychological state , with a particular emphasis on defining the neurobiological underpinnings that govern these relationships. In speech-language pathology, there exist obvious, but poorly-understood interactions among successful cranial sensorimotor behaviors (vocalizing, swallowing, coordination of breathing) and cognitive/psychological state. Understanding these relationships and their neurobiological underpinnings would significantly advance our ability to treat patients with voice, swallowing, and airway disorders. Thus, the ultimate goal of Dr. Hoffmeister's research is to develop methods of optimizing cognitive/psychological state to improve motor learning and performance. This can improve clinical outcomes for patients with diverse etiologies of dysphonia and dysphagia. Dr. Hoffmeister's lab is currently focused on refining methods of objectively measuring changes in vocal function while examining degree of sympathetic nervous system activation through a novel use of high-resolution manometry (HRM) and online biomonitoring.

Research Summary
I spend my clinical time treating patients with benign and malignant disease of the head neck. Given that this disease is strongly associated with tobacco use, I have become interested in the tobacco-related carcinogenesis and the risk of oral cancer. Specifically, I am driven to produce new and clinically applicable knowledge about the carcinogenic events that lead to oral carcinoma. Many of our patients have a history of smoking, but the factors that cause some smokers to develop carcinoma while others do not are poorly studied. This gap in knowledge led me to study tobacco related carcinogenesis in oral/head and neck cancer. We seek to better understand the specific carcinogens most important in the genesis of oral cancer. This research is expected to not only significantly increase understanding of tobacco-related carcinogenesis, but also aid in risk assessment for oral cancer as well as tobacco regulation efforts.

Research Summary
I have a deep passion for translational research and commercialization and have dedicated my academic career since graduate school to push novel and challenging neurotechnologies to significantly help patients across a diverse range of health conditions (e.g., deafness, tinnitus, pain, immune disorders). Even though such a translational/commercialization pathway is not common in academia, I have found the journey to be extremely rewarding to witness the clinical impact new medical devices can have on patients suffering from nervous system disorders.
Since starting my faculty position at the University of Minnesota in 2009, my lab has focused on medical device translational research, in which we identify important clinical problems, and pursue proof-of-concept animal experiments and computational analyses followed by appropriate safety studies to move to human pilot studies as soon as possible. Considering the complexity of health disorders and diseases associated with the nervous system, and our limited knowledge of how they manifest themselves in humans (i.e., there is a major knowledge gap from animals to human models), the goal of the lab has been to move to human studies quickly and safely based on the initial animal findings. These discoveries in humans then feed back into further animal and computational research to fine-tune hypotheses and treatment parameters moving towards large scale controlled trials with transparency and rigor. In addition to neural prostheses, a major thrust of the lab has been to develop a wide range of non-invasive stimulation technologies, such as electrical and ultrasound energy modalities, combined with methods to alter affective states to be able to probe and modulate the nervous system and body to treat various health disorders. My lab also works closely with companies, as well as transitioning my own innovations into start-ups out of the university, to quickly move the scientific research and technologies from the lab to the clinic towards treating many patients across socioeconomic disparities.

My general philosophy on medicine is to establish a partnership with my patients and to explain/provide all possible treatment options for a broad range of general otolaryngology issues including complex facial trauma, hearing loss and other ear disorders, common pediatric problems, thyroid problems, salivary gland disease, voice disorders. One of my primary reasons for working here is to help train and educate otolaryngology (ENT) residents. My career to date has been focused on caring for people that do not have ready access to medical care whether that be in rural areas or urban centers, putting myself where people need care the most.

Research Summary
I started my research career as a resident in otolaryngology. I was looking for a way to reduce edema in skin flaps because edema seemed to influence survival. Measuring edema in a real time method was the first challenge, so I developed a device to measure tissue compliance as a correlate of tissue edema. This was my Ph.D. thesis. I began exploring ways of reducing edema with hollow fibers. This led to several studies in experimental skin flaps, and then application to compartment syndrome and brain edema. The aim of the current grant is to use hollow fibers in a ventriculostomy drainage catheter to reduce brain edema after traumatic brain injury.

Bio
I enjoy all aspects of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, but I have a particular interest in head and neck reconstruction following major cancer surgery or trauma. I am also interested in functional and aesthetic nasal surgery. My approach to patient care is to establish a cooperative relationship where the patient and I work as a team to achieve their health goals. When not at work, I enjoy cycling and food-based fermentation projections including breadmaking and cheesemaking.
